Wet or dry skimming ?

Whats the deal with this and why do you chose one or the other? I always skim dry, get real gunky skimmate out. I'm trying to figure out why anyone chooses wet or dry skimming, do they pull different types of waste out?

Sometimes setting your skimmer to skim wet helps to send it down the discharge tube into the collection sump.

if you have a remote resivor for you skimate to go in not just the colection cup (hole in colection cup with a tube to a milk jug or 2 liter)

Wet skimming will remove the impurities faster but it wastes a lot more seawater. If you OD the tank on something or a fish dies some people might tell you that you need to wet skim for a while until everythings ok. You'll just have to top off with saltwater instead of RO.

Wet skimming(more air) bubbles up into the waste collector faster, but does take more water out with the waste products.
It takes out more dissolved organics with it though.
Dry skimming(less bubbles) will perculate much more before it pushes up into the waste collector, so you won't get as much skimmate but what you get will be thicker because you're removing more solid waste. Your skimmer will need to be cleaned more often because the sludge buid up inside the skimmer.
The Deltec hob skimmer I had skimmed wet, the skimmate was pretty clear, but the waste smelled so strong it stunk, so it was pulling out nasty stuff.
Don't know if that helps, but lots of successful tanks skimming both ways, so do what works for you.
