Wet skimming

Todd ,
Here's a pic of the skimmer( that needs cleaning).
I just wanted you to notice the water is still pretty clear , and all the detritus sitting in the bottom and stuck to the walls .

So Todd, I want to modify my CS8-2 to a RC Skimmer. Seen any good info on that. It seems like it would be pretty easy. Hef
Hef, I highly recommend it. The recirculating design makes for much more efficient skimming.... As you can see from my pics, my skimmer has skimmed my tank so well, it's slowed down as of late, and that's all the skimmate I got in 38 hours... However for many months I was running a little drier, and it was skimming like madââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Âfilling the cup every couple of days. This skimmer really beats the heck out of the flow through one pump in sump CS6-2 and CS8-2 I've previously used...

Check out the pics in my gallery from when I added my LR 4 months agoââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Âit was incredible, filling the cup with thick nasty stuff in only a couple of hours.

And I have always found a direct correlation between the bio-load and the performance of my skimmersââ"šÂ¬Ã¢â‚¬Âmore so with needlewheels and less so with Becketts. But add a school of anthias, and the skimmer produces more skimmate in any given period... I guess the difference is that you folks are skimming VERY wet...

I use 2 cs8-2 skimmers in a sump that has 300 gallons an hour flowing through it. Its like a recirculating skimmer box. Incredible how clean it keeps my tank. All my acros and monties have fantastic color and great growth.
Does anyone keep acropora monticolosals? I have 2 and they are so beautiful.
How about pink pocillipora? I have one that glows with pink.

FYI - I cleaned out the air flow intake to my Sedra pump a couple of days ago. What a difference! That's what was causing all of my overflows, - not enough air in the skimmer. I set the skimmer back to the very wet setting, and I've been pulling out a perfect 1/2 gallon per day. This morning I sat there and stared at what came out of my skimmer the last 24 hours. Amazing amount of detritus with the 1/2 gallon of green water.

I will be cleaning that air hole more often now.

i think i run the exact opposite. I have tried to get mine wet but it always ends up super dry. To the point that i collect a gallong of skimmate every 2 weeks and then there will be about 1/4" thick of sludge in the skimmer chamber...

I am running a PM bullet 1 on a 1500gph pump, so maybe that has something to do with it?

With wet skimming you should be pulling a lot of water out a day Close to what joefish wrote. I'm pulling out close to 16 oz a day and I'm not wet skimming. So I would think you should easly see 32-48 oz at a minimum.

Here is the amount of skimmate I get in a week. So if yours looks like this, I'd say you are not wet skimming.

How do you guys liek JB NY get that! In Anthony Calfo's forum there is a thread about skimming. Do you guys have it setup like how he explainis it?

OH come on Joe. Thats not Skimmate! That's Joe's latest Home Brewed Guiness Stout!

Since everyone likes to post photos of their wet skimmers here is mine. I run the foam about 1/4" lower than this to get about 1/2 gallon per day.

TexasTodd, I don't like the idea of running the skimmer so close to overflowing. Mainly I think people make a change in their habits when they are looking to "fix" something. I'm happy with the results I'm getting skimming the way I am.

Joe, dude you have no idea how many times I've meant to lower the water level in the skimmer only to raise it. the -/+ is the way to go. :D

I do that when I'm rushing and not paying attention too .

Very interesting and enlightening. Thanks very much. Too bad I have a cheap venturi-type skimmer that won't allow much "fiddling" to get more or less "wet" skimmate.

Ive been skimming wet now for about 4 or 5 months now, i was using a ER, and im now using a H&S. I have a MRC sitting in my garage, but until i can get my sump drilled i wont be able to go beckett...

Since ive started to skim wet ive had a lot of overflows in the skimmer cup, some ive caught others just happened while i was gone. For the ones ive caught.. the bubbles are the top start turning into little micro bubbles, and it start overflowing into the cup very quickly.

This usually just happened for no apparent reason, i hadnt put anything in the tank, no WC all day. I just see it happen... I cant figure out what causes this. But it has caused me to lower my water level in the skimmer about 2 inches to prevent this. Can anyone clue me in what is going on?? When i go beckett style, do you think i will have less of these overflows? Or does everyone get these...I probably get 1 or 2 a week!
