What about using ONLY PVC...

...to aquascape a tank?

Kind of like the frag tanks with acrylic rods... think about it; 1) NO place for detrius to hide, 2) EASY to re-aquascape, 3) cheap, and 4) they would be all covered anyways with all the corals...

Thoughts?

It's been used lots of times to make a structure to support a skin of LR and coral instead of building up a solid base structure of LR. Just be sure and drill some holes in the pipe to prevent anaerobic spots from building up in the pipes. You can even attach a powerhead to some of the piping to make for circulation under the structure.

No no no... no LR AT ALL...

only the pvc itself, with corals directly on the pvc. Flow throughout a tank like that would be insane.

sounds ugly to me too, but wondering if you roughed up the pvc enough, you could house the bacteria there.. or just maybe glued rubble on to cover the surface... solves some of the ugly and some of the bacteria problem...
I know I read about someone doing something like that at one point for an eel, but they were using live rock in conjunction.

Sounds really ugly...

Plus 2 or 3...

although if that is your cup of tea have at it. It's cheap, if you are not happy after a few months scrap it and start over.

Perhaps use different sizes of pipe for visual interest?

I wonder if you filled a few sections with sand would you be able to have adequate surface area for bacteria?

If you do try this, I'd use hole saws to cope the ends of the pipe so you can glue pieces directly to each other instead of using Tees and Elbows. Might help it look better...

Randy raises a good point. The use of LR isn't just for decoration, but provides the fundamental backbone of filtration for a reef tank. So that brings up the question of filtration plans as well.

no LR here (Pallobi's tank from the BB thread)

It looks all modern and strange. BUT, there's coraline algae all over that tank, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say the sump has got to be full of live rock. I don't think you could have a successful tank without some live rock somewhere. If not in the display tank, than in the sump. What is the real point of trying to make a reef tank with NO LR at all? If you want millions of bioballs you could probably pull this off, but you'll be doing water changes like a mad person from all the nitrates....

Note the absence of any finned, swimming, creeping, crawling critters in that tank? Coral only, so not much of a bioload, hence LR not as critical?

Anyone ever coated an overflow or glass with sand using glue or something? I've often considered that when I actually start a tank with an overflow. Cover the acrylic with sand, maybe few shells or other odds & ends. You could try it on the PVC as well?

He does have fish in it because he posted shots in the minimal aquascaping thread a page or two ago.

He has a tang that likes to follow traffic.
