I am looking at stocking my tank, and my lights are strong. I have a load of birdsnests and they are going to go about halfway up the rock. What can I place at the very top? Thanks in advance.
Pretty much any SPS is a "high light" coral. As long as you acclimate it properly. I don't think there are really a whole lot of them that don't like a lot of light. Maybe a few.
To list the few that don't like a ton of light would probably a lot shorter and easier.
How close are your 1000w bulbs to the water anyway?
I thought the lights were strong. Perhaps not 1000w mh though ;0
It is 36 3w leds over a 17 gallon ada 60p. The tank is 18 inches high, and the bulbs eight inches from the surface. To counter the leds flooding the room with light I am using 60degree optics.
Perhaps that is not such an intense setup after all?
almost any sps can handle that light but some will have to adjust to it. either raise and lower the lights or coral . or dim the lights and slowly bring them up.
Thanks folks. whilst I have this thread open can I ask an additional question please.
With regards to light acclimation. Would you say, starting at the bottom of the tank, and moving one inch up a week is too slow, or too fast? I know all SPS are different, but as a general guide what would you say? Thanks.
I would think that moving up too slow wouldn't be a problem. It might just extend the time needed to color up fully. However, the real issue might be moving up too quickly as it can shock the coral and cause it to bleach. From what has happened to me in the past, I would rather deal with a browned out coral than a bleached one.
Brown corals eventually color up. Bleached ones don't. go slow one inch a week is ok the led intensity is what u have to be careful with start low and ramp it up. Maybe alternate one week move up an inch the next week increase intensity and repeat good luck the first sign of bleaching move down or dial back lights
