I never had this problem with my first reef tank. With my first reef I had an urchin that was constantly scraping the rock, but don't know if this was the key. Anybody have sucesss with urchins?
I've had a few urchins. They are great for scraping the rocks clean.I especially like the long spin[black with subtle blue dots]....They grow rather quickly though and knock things over. The last one I had ate coral skeleton[the dead parts]...I have a green branching hammer coral,he ate the branches til the polyps broke off from the main colony. On a couple of heads he ate into the polyp .At that point I gave him back to the lfs.
cubber, are you puting the pods in the display or sump?
I had some pods in my first nano that came in on the rock that I bought for the mushroom corals on it. I wonder if it was them that kept the tank clean because it was much more clean than the tank I have now.
I'm planning on getting an external power filter for mechanical filtration. And when that's quite in control I'll convert it into a pod refugium by removing the filter cartridges for good. Then when I build my own sump, I'll put in a compartment for miracle mud for pods.
