What are the advantages of a fuge or sump?

Well a sump does a few things...
1- It allows extra water volume which helps stabilize water parameters like salinity
2-It allows the use of a larger skimmer and a place to put a heater to remove clutter from the tank.
A refugium(fuge) can be used as a safe place for growing macro algae and hosting pods and other microlife. The macro-algae is good for absorbing excess nutrients from the water like phosphate and nitrate thus helping to starve micro-algae
By lighting on a reverse schedule from the main display tank it helps maintain the ph when the tanks photosynthesis cycle is over.
A fuge incorporated into a sump or in addition to a sump is really very beneficial.
