What are these?

The polyps started growing about a year ago on one of my rocks. Now they are about one inch tall and look like a cross between a zoo and palm tree. I was just curious if anyone might know what they were.

Yep palys. Same protocal as other zoos, xenia, mushrooms and GSP. Keep then confined to one area. They are nice but will spread like wildfire under good tank conditions.

You all were helpful with the last one, soooo..... how about this one!
This Brown fuzzy stuff is groing in clumps all over my tank. They kind of respond to touch, by what appears to retract into a tube, but I am not really sure.
It is pretty much is a pile of thin hair-like pieces with pom pom fuzzyness poking out :)
let me know if you recognize it.

its been there for over a year, and doesn't seem to bother anything...as far as I can tell.
I tool some down to aquatic central and he was as puzzled as me. He thought it might be something out of brackish water but wasn't sure.

I thought it might be some kind of algea for a while, but my tangs wont touch the stuff. and if I touch it, all of the fuzzy stuff goes away...... such strange things we find growing in our reefs :)

Hi guys!

About the first picture,
they are palys and as Seminolecpa said, they will spread if conditions are right.

The second picture,
I actually had the same question about 2 years ago when I had a little nano. A rock with mushrooms that I bought came with lots of them. I thought I was in trouble, but I was told they were just harmless filter-feeding worms and they don't bother any one. They didn't spread much in my tank and didn't bother any one.

Take care!

:)

Hiya Maynor.

Kind of a cool worm, huh?

I had some tiny red ones somewhere too. With a calcareous tube like a mini coco worm.

i had a bunch of those.. the MARS president told me they were hydroids...

those are hydroids =( they'll eventually take over, and they keep corals from opening because they do sting a bit. Really hard to get rid of.

I put rocks with these guys into my 32 gallon, and something ate them all... not sure what.

Wow you had something eat hydroids? You should add some hydroids and watch very close most people have to go to extrems, I almsot crashed a tank killing hydriods.

Hmm... just googled some pics of hydroids. They do look like the ones in your pic.

This one?

So hydroids don't have a tube like feather dusters, do they?

i had a small 4g tank, and hydroids went crazy, kept my zoos from opening, and such. Then I sold that tank and put the rocks into my 32g. In a month they were all gone while before they were thriving like crazy for a few weeks. The rocks went straight from one tank to the other, the 4g tank always got it's new water from the 32g, so not sure if it what it was. My emerald crab did eat a few armor of god zoos, and a desert fox paly, so maybe he grabbed some hydroids to eat as well =P

I have scarlet hermits, trochus snails, astraea snail, ceriths, nassarius vibex, a cleanershrimp, a flame angel, and two ocellaris. not sure what would eat hyroids...
