My pump that runs for my chiller broke a couple weeks ago so i had to use a Rio Hf 32(I hate that pump)because thats all i had that could handle the head pressure. My chiller is outside w/ 35' of pipe but 15' of head pressure.
Anyhow got tired of hearing that loud a*s pump and turned it off yesterday so today my tank ran all day with no chiller and temp was perfect.
This morning my temp was 78.9(no lights) and thats because the heater and was 81 at the end of the day w/ no chiller.I wont try this on a hot day.Normally it stays at 80.1 w/ lights out and 81.0 w/ lights on.
Ive never timed it but with running the Rio my chiller runs maybe 1 1/2 hours a day,4-5 mins at a time.
I switch about a month ago from 2x 400w to 2x 250w with 4 54w T5's and Im still getting used to lower temps on the tank AND IN THE HOUSE.

Sorry about the long post but is it normal for a pump to cause a 3 degree temp rise?BTW temp is monitored by RK2.

Rio HF are loud rough running pumps, but what they're not is hot running. They ran cooler than any other submersible pump I've run. But they're noisy as he--. A 32 could possibly raise it a few degrees though. Yes possible.

Hey Doug. When are you going to pick up your Peppermint shrimp man?

I just let my tank do its thing bro'. 82 degrees at night and about 84.5 during the day now that the season has changed a little on us. During Summer it was about 84 at night and close to 86.5 during the day. Pretty soon, if we get a winter, that chiller should never have to come on.
,
I moved those corals(Birdsnest, Hammer and that other one) towards the top. More growth for sure and bigger polyp extension too.

hey Dean.glad to hear your tanks doing good.Been trying to wrap up that bathroom remod.I pmed you acouple days ago, been running around getting stuff ready for madisons birthday.

Why don't you have your controller turn off the feed pump when the chiller isn't needed? Or is that what you meant?

I have 2-150w on a 24" tall tank FWIW. And I have SPS very near the bottom with no problem. Water quality and clarity plays a huge role in it. But if I had to do it all over I would get 250w. I am happy with my 150w though.

from what ive read I cant or should not run the chilller while the pump is off...?Not sure how it would screw up the chiller but thats what coralife has in their book..........what do you guys think? If it ll work ill do it.
2nd day without chiller 81.6.I really like this.:bounce3::bounce3:

The reason for not running the chiller if the pump is not running is.....GUNK.....CRAP.

If the pump is not running & the water is just stagnent in the tubes, your going to get all kinds of crap clinging to the tubes in the chiller. Not only will this eat away at the tubes ( Titainium or not )....it will. Also it will slow down the water flow depending on how much crap has collected in the tubes.

would this be a problem if i clean the chiller 3-4x's a year? Its outside so its easy to do.
How long can the water sit in the chiller lines before it becomes bad for tank.I could set it up if the temp is good that it will also turn on for a couple mins every few hours.WYO?

From the sounds of it....your temp readings.

Why are you running a chiller....????

i always had the chiller because for the last couple years i had 2 400's and needed it.Im starting to find out my new 250's are not as hot.Id still like to keep it hooked up for hot days.My house doesn't have AC and does get hot and stuffy when we are at work.I have to close up the house when we leave because of the alarm.Thats why i was asking about hooking the feed pump up to my controller and how long tank water is good in the lines.
thanks for the help flipper.
