What brand of Phosphate remover?

Thanks Lunchbucket - maybe I'll shoot him an email to see what his experience was if he doesn't post here.

Chicago - I see you're using rowa in a Lifeguard filter. That's what I'm thinking of doing. How is it working for you? I currently run carbon in one of the Lifeguard chemical filters and I love it - easy to plumb, clean and fit into narrow spaces.

I too have been using the PhoSar in a canister filter with matrix carbon. PO4 undetectable. I like the larger pellet form. Easy to work with.

Has anyone ever used phos-buster? I won some at one of our club meetings, but I'm very leary about using it. It's a liquid that you pour in your sump - not granular like phosban or rowa. Just wondering if anyone has tried it and how it works.

I like it but you can't use it if you have a yellow tang.

Why? Will it kill the yellow tang? I have an Orangeshoulder Tang. Would that be a problem?

Wouldn't that liquid stuff drop the phos. too fast to be safe for SPS?

Anyway I've used:

PhosGuard:Never had any of the aluminium toxicity side effects that the writers have been writing about but played it safe and switched.

Phos-X from Hagen: Not used much by people here but the only GFO available from the LFS. Big chunks of GFO would work good for those that don't want to run a reactor.

Phosban: Like everyone else some rusty water but worked good. I don't run a reactor so it does clump pretty bad if I don't break it up once and a while.

Rowa: The phosban was getting old and was curious about ROWA so I order some on wed. got here today. So this is day one with it. Expensive compared to phosban unless it turns out be so much more capable.

150G of Phosban $15 big bag
100ml of Rowa $15 about a 1/4 of what you get from PB.

Its got a month or two to impress me or it is back to PhosBan.

All of them worked I've never had a phosphate problem.

Hello folks, newbie question here. Is Kent Phosphate sponge the same thing as what has been talked about above? I was given a large jug of the stuff. Says phosphate and silicate removal media. It is white in color and granular? Curious as i am about to get a phosban reactor to run on my tank. Thanks for all help.

I just started up a phosban reactor yesterday, running phosban. Can you add carbon and phosban together in one reactor or do you need to run two separate reactors?

It is doubtful they would be used up at the same rate. And whatever one is softer(probably the PB) would slowly get ground up by the harder one. Not a great idea.

Up until now it was phosban but i have a huge tub of pura phoslock so im going to use that. Thinking its the same or pretty close.

Cathman (plumber :) ) I think theres like 2 types of phos remover, not sure of the ingredients but theres the white kind which imo doesnt work as well as the rust colored, phosban and the like which for me worked excellent. The second one has to be used carefully as the first water out whatever your using it in will be rust colored and it can kill your fish by getting into their gills. I always bleed my reactor until clear and then let it ride.

rowa is 33% more expensive basically----- 1ml=1g....so make your choice.....with phosban if you complain about rusty water duhhhhhhhhh..drain the first two gallons of output into a bucket and dump it...thats all no biggie..or just get rowa.....

be careful introducing this stuff with atank already heavily stocked...can cause PH shifts greatly and some small ALK shifts

i put 150G's of phosban and about 25g's of chemi pure on top in the TLF reactor but let the output drain over socks of chemi pure in the sump....my water has really looked way TTTTTOOOOoo Clear..almost sterile...algae hates me

i let mine drain over some filter floss... what is amazing is that the filter floss gets rusty with the phosban... note ... i run it through a kent unit then throgh a life guard filter and the stuff still gets throgh ...

sorry hit reply before ending my thoughts...

so that is why i was wondering about the warner marine product... is it more like pellet carbon?

The powder that settles will get loose with the first couple of gallons. Need to find a way to catch the first couple of gallons before it gets to your tank.

i let five gallons or ten go through it into a bucket and throw out that water... so get a small water change in .... but what i am saying is that the stuff still degrades and fine particles are coming out ...

turns the filter floss in the bucket redish black

Yup, I run filter socks and they all are getting brown/red

shooter... how do you like the warner product... is it keepingits size or does it kinda turn into mush? some vendor was saying that he did not like theproduct as it had a problem keeping it granualar size...

i was interested in this product because it seemed to have the potential to have less of a run off. in other words like many who use this stuff.. i put it in my reactor and allow about 5 or 10 gallonsof tank water to flush throgh it thereby cleaning the dust out ...the flush water goes down the drain and the added benifit is a 5 to 10 gallon water change...

what i noticed with the rowa phose is the water cleared earlier than when i used the phosban.. i also noticed that the water was more red with the phosban...

so let us know and if you can please tell how you use yours

thanks

Touching back on this...I just changed out my first batch of PHOSaR from my canister filter after about a month in there. It was NOT mush at all, it was NOT compacted together into a solid mass, it was still in the shapes it was in when I first poured it in there. As far as I've noticed too, it cleared very quickly when I put new in and rinsed it. PO4 levels have remained undetectable per salifert test. So, there you go...just thought I'd update this since it was asked about before.

See you all are talking about this media here. What about the reactor itself.I need one,and looking to find out at a good price. It seems there are a lot for small systems. But I have a total water volume of say 150 to maybe 180 gallons.Any fairly good deals out there.Or any large size DIY versions ?
