what butterfly is this?

I bought this earlier this year and the guys at my LFS didn't know what kind it was. can ya'll help me?

it's really small, about the size of a half dollar

Looks like an Chaetodon melannotus( black back butterfly)

I think you are right.I didn't see the spot on the tail at 1st.

Unless they are paying attention, I think most stores will call it a blackback; technically, it's a spot-tail.
