I would say go with a DSLR. Cannon has the Digital Rebel XT or XTi that makes a nice camera. I personally have the XT. Cost is around $500 and if you want a decent zoom lens for it, you can pick up a 200mm for around $200 new
I agree... XT is a great beginning camera and will run circles around any point and shoot camera out there - provided you get an OK lens. All macro lenses these days are going to cost you more than an XT though. I recommend the Tamron 90mm unless you have alot of money then I would go with the Canon 100mm macro.
