i dont have a ro/di unit and i use tap water. what can i use to help purifiy the water? or can i buy ro/di water anywhere?

i have a 90 reef and im trying to beef up my system by running it more cleaner like adding a fuge and i want to give my coralsd everything they need to grow and not die off!!!!

www.thefilterguys.biz Well built products and EXCELLENT customer service. I have one of their units and they were SO helpful to me: at the time I also had no experience with RO units. They steered me away from things I didn't need and added a few things I didn't know I needed (ex. chloramine, instead of chlorine, filter set). You will not be sorry for buying this product.

If you dont have it in your budget to buy a full RO system at the moment, another option is buying 5 gal jugs of water from HD or Lowes. Its enough to top off with each week for about 5$

there's also (pr was) a water place down on rt 40 ... maybe someone knows more about that and can chime in

i got mine from airwaterice.com

I also got mine from "TheFilterGuys" and would recommend them to anyone! Awesome experience, and amazing customer service! Quality product as well.

i dont get it i use RO water and i still have hair algea and diatoms like you wouldnt fricken belive ...and its not overfeeding that for sure i only have one fish that fricken eats...the other one picks up whatever is in the sand!

Ask Santa for one.

But in the mean-time one of the LFS does sell RO water (maybe DI to can't remember) for $.20 a gallon. Just have to bring your own buckets.

My understanding, after a lengthy onversation with Dr Mac one day, is that the RO is not worth buying on it's own. I won't get overly specific as to why, but his advice to me was "just use the tap water until you can get the RO/DI, because the RO alone won't make your water safe. "

Hey Tat2,
FWIW tank predator asked a similar question a bit ago about which unit to buy. here is the thread:
http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1252806

Ill not restart that debate here.
Having just RO would be a improvement over tap, but realistically, if you're going to go through the trouble of setting one up, its worth it to just get a RODI unit from the start.
each stage of the unit progressively cleans the water. the sediment takes out large chunks of debris, the charcoal some of the chlorinating and flourinating compunds, the RO membrane rejects most of the rest of the impurities leaving about ~99% pure water. that last ~1% is cleaned out by the deionizing gel in the DI stage. it does as the name implies and removes any ionic compounds, including dissolved metal salts, phosphates, ect...
Cheers
Eric

Well if you can test your tap water with a TDS meter and see what it says it would help to know if you should bother. I was considering using tap water untill I did that... my water out of the faucet tested at 388... the stuff from HD that I use tested at 45. I know it isnt perfect but thats a whole lot of stuff that isnt necessary going into my tank if I were to use tap water.

Thats pretty good for a well. Must have a filer on it already because most people with a well have tons of minerals and there tds is upwards of 500.

If your buying RO water from anywhere make sure your testing it..

I use RO/DI and still have some algaes to... you'd probally have ALOT more if you used straight up tap water.

You can also buy distilled water from anywhere, that has a TDS of 0
