What Chiller Do You Recommend And Why?

Hello;

I'm planning my new 210-gallon reef and was wondering if you have any suggestions for a chiller.

I currently have an Aqua Logic Cyclone Chiller (1/4 hp ) on my current 92-galon reef. I've had it for as long as I have had this tank (8 years) without issues; but, I thought I would ask others for their thoughts.

I'm thinking I'm going to need a 1/2 or even a 3/4 hp unit.

What brands do you like and why?

I use current modular. Just b/c I had two of them one old as backup and a new one I got at a great price. There's other good ones but all in all a chiller is a chiller.
Here's other brands that are pretty good.

I run an Aqua Logic Delta Star 1/3hp on my 250g reef and I've found it to be perfectly adequate. That said, I have an open top canopy and made a lot of equipment choices to minimize unnecessary heat gain. I run the chiller at 81, which is only a 2-3 degree pulldown. I could probably get by with fans, but I'm in the minority that prefers using a chiller to export that heat to the outdoors rather than putting extra humidity in the house.

I have Pacific coast and it has worked perfect but If I was to do the tank all over I would have choosed the eco cooler because of the electric savings.

Jeff, how long does your 1/3 hp unit run to pull down the temp? My 1/4hp on my 92-gallon now runs about 45 minutes to pull my tank down 2 degrees.

Rogger, interesting unit!!!! Do you know of anyone who might have one installed?

I'm not exactly sure how long it runs....the unit is outside, so I don't necessarily know when it turns on and off. I would say that it runs a little over an hour when it cycles. Possibly longer in the afternoon when it's battling outdoor heat as well as the full lighting on the tank.

I've been meaning to hook a timer between the temp controller and the chiller to record how long it's on each day. I might go set that up now, I'm curious to know myself.

No, I don't know anyone but I have read some good review on the SPS forum and also in the Deltec Forum

I use a tradewinds super 1/3 hp chiller on my 210. Works great and came with a five year warranty.
