I bougth this scolymia the other day from a LFS for $23 in the clearence section because it was browned out. I took a chance and bought it and after 2 weeks this is what it looks like.

The scolymia is about 3 inches across, and it's hard to tell from the picture but the center is slightly turquoise or neon green. Any guesses, comments, or criticisms welcomed. Also what's the best way to rehab a scolymia? Thanks....

Thanks.....it's improved in color alot since i bought it. I was literally a brownish/gray color when i got it. I have no clue if it's an aussie scoly or not cuz the tank that it was in was labeled nano corals-$29.99 (they had a 20% deal going which is how i got it for 23).

Hmmm i certainly hope it turns a better color but if not, it was a good deal anyway. I feel that it will get better because i think it's still recovering because it rarely puts out feeder tentacles even when i feed the tank. Any idea why this might be? I ask because this is my first scoly after a long time of trying to find a good deal on one.

it's covered in byropsis though, not sure I'd risk that in my tank for 23 dollars. Sure bryopsis and be prepared to take some action

I agree. Sort out the bryopsis just in case it gets out of hand.

Feed it. If its not opening wait until a few hours after lights out and feed it something meaty then.

cheers

is really hard to tell once the coral has brown out,
again too many variables can played an effect on coloration
w/ corals. I would guess grayish purple w/ hence of green.

There are a lot of scolys coming out of australia that are not the regular HOT colors they seem to always send. This one is not bleached or browned out at all.It will probably end up a pretty purple with grey highlights.Just my opinion.

In my case I brought some in on LR. I had a large trochus (species unknown) and a collector urchin (Tripnuestes gratilla) whom I fenced in with the affected rock. They cleaned it up pretty quickly.

Also there are different species of bryopsis and some are hard to eliminate. I don't know how much of it you've got but from my observations its very hard to get rid of once its on most of your rockwork. If I had all my rocks covered in bryopsis I'd probably switch out the rock.

Anyhow the large trochus definitely ate the stuff as did the urchin. But given a choice of other algae the urchin only ate bryopsis when there was nothing else available.

BTW have you tried raising magnesium?

I was able to rip off all of the algae that was in a ball but there is only the little bit that's on the scolymia base. I started raising the mag and had it at 1500 for about 5 days with no results. However, i was just told that i should try it up more around 1650-1700. So i think i'm gonna try that. The only problem is that all my snails are in shock.

In all honesty I've never had to try altering mag levels. But I know others who have. It seemed to work for some but not for others.

If its only on that piece of rock with the scoly, scrub as much as possible off. Then fence it off with a suitable herbivore like I did.

good luck
