I want to set up my reef with T5s, but I don't know what sort of corals you can grow under them. Are they good for all corals, or d you need better lighting (halides) to grow some corals (e.g. stonies).
Thanks in advance for your help,
Flobajob
it all depends on how many watts per gallon to decide the right lighting for certain corals. So how big is your tank, and what is the wattage of your T5's?
In my opinion is ok if the t5 have individual reflectors. With that lighting you could have almost every coral, maybe with the exeption of the more light demanding sps.
I have a 20g reef with a odysseas 48w t5ho and it do not have individual reflectors and with that lighting Iam keeping a condy for over a year and have grow a lot. Also a month ago a friend gift me a porites sps because it was bleached and he belive it will die in his aquarium and he says me if it live I can keep it and since that day have grow a lot of new polyps.
i've seen pics of tanks with every kind of coral kept under them, including the most hard to keep sps which were growning nicely. post for pics of tanks under t5 in the lighting section of the forums....there are quite a few posts already for exactly that so if you just do a quick scan through there you will find plenty of info.
I would think that that may not be enough either. I would at least try for the 3-39 watt, more would be better. Watts per gallon have little to do with it, but rather, overall intensity does.
I tried to skimp on the lighting at first. I had like 80 watts of PC on my 20 gallon and it just sucked. Nothing grew not even the LPS. I tried a monitipora digitata SPS, but it faded and died.
I waited and just went for it and got a 6x24watt t-5 setup w/ individual relfectors. That's almost 150 over my 20 gallon. I now have acros growing along the top. I am SO much happier with the good lighting setup.
For anyone trying to get by with inadequate lighting, just cut your losses and do it right. You'll be amazed at the effect it has on your tank. It's SO worth it!
