Why are some of my zoas detaching from frag plugs and rock ? They are detaching with like 5-10 heads at a time and floating arond in the tank.. Not all of my zoas are doing this, weird, i dont understand. Can any 1 help me or are they just getting old ???
Sounds like they are recolonizing. Zoanthus do this often whereas palythoas and protopalythoas stay put. You will find that Zoanthids like GDE, Eagle Eyes, basically all filter feeder zoanthids, will detatch and resettle new locations.
I have a large and fairly crowded colony in QT doing this. Good to know that it's normal! When I find a chunk starting to float loose I cut it off and glue it to something so it won't get lost. Plus, once it gets to the floaty stage the polyps quit opening up. I figure it's better for them to get them stuck back down sooner than waiting for them to float off.
