What Counts as DIY?

thats what i am saying it is not a good idea to depend on 2 pumps like that. i have heard of people doing that but as i said they are "flirting with disaster" so to speak. i just want to see you do it right the first time and not have to worry about it.. I also read up about pump recommendations i like the quiet one pumps for submersible but i have since switched to an external pump and will never go back...

OK...so how about THIS...

Run a drain straight into the sump and have a return to the drilled bulkhead. Keep both standpipes high up in case of power outage. Then take the canister and have it pulling from the sump AND returning to the sump so I can run carbon, water polishers, etc. if needed. If that's what you were saying before, I'm sorry I didn't understand. Unfortunately, I'm dealing with a 15 high here, so I'm not sure I can have a fuge section, can I? I'm wondering if I can cut out part (or all) of the divider in my cabinet. Not sure if it would compromise the integrity of the stand. If I can, it opens a bunch more options for me!

With this setup do I need to look at baffling the sump? Is it the skimmer that causes the micobubbles?

that is exactly what i was talking about...

i would put baffles in the sump to cut down on micro bubbles.
they can come from the skimmer but mostly from the drain. you can you put a fuge in there just a small one but better then nothing. put the skimmer in the drain part then put the baffles and then ur fuge and then baffles and then leave enough room for your return pump to fit..

Thanks Justin!

The one last thing I am facing is the barbed nipples on my bulkheads. I am going to be forced into using flexible hosing. Anyone have thoughts on pool hosing vs. clear plastic, etc? Also, is there any issue with having the drain and return so close together? They would be just a couple of inches apart.

I can MAYBE get a shot of the divider panel I'm talking about...but I think it's in there only to be able to have shelves. It's nice to have shelves, but I think a bigger sump is more important! IF I can remove them, I could probably fit a 30 long in there easy.

look into spa flex hose works good and is strong, if it is only for shelves you should be able to take it out and make a sump bigger. and it doesnt matter that the drain and return are that close thats how reef ready tanks are.. you can add fittings on the return to point it in the direction you want..

Sweet! I'll look forward to taking some pics when it's all done. Now I just need to pick out a pump and skimmer! Boy oh boy...that could be three more pages on two different threads!! :)

i like the asm skimmers well built and work good easy to maintain and for pumps i would look into quiet one pumps maybe a quiet one 3000 or 4000. and maybe an asm g1-x or look into octopus skimmers i have heard good things about them too..

Yeah, those look good. What does 3/4" MNPT mean though? My bulkhead barbs are 3/4" so I'm going to need that on the return. I would think it doesn't matter on the inlet side. Do you run a hose on the inlet, leave it sitting there, or put a strainer on it? Why does one answer beget more than one question!? :)

Thanks Justin...you da man! I just got home and I'm going to try and take some photos. I'm also going to call Hagen customer service and see about taking out the middle panel in the stand. Thanks for all your help, I really appreciate it! Hopefully, I can help someone soon too!
