K i am about to cook live rock and after i will put it in my display tank.... the display tank will have dry sand and fresh salt water... will there be a cycle i must wait for if the rock is already done????

a separate question???? how do you set up a QT tank , and how long do you put your fish in there for? is there anything special you do to your fish while in there??? and is the clean up crew supposed to go in there as well?

many questions i know but i wanna do this right...

thanks

Add the rock sand and water to the display tank and start it all at once, there is no need for a separate rock curing unless the stuff has got tons of dead matter. Your cycle will be shortest this way.

A QT tank is a place to put fish/corals for something like 2 weeks or until you are satisfied that the specimen is healthy and will not add anything undesirable to your main tank. A clean up crew is a good idea, it is just a mini aquarium.

I have to cook the rock because it has a lot of hair algae so in a sense i am starting with cured live rock, dry sand, and fresh salt water..... so after the rock is cooked i will have another cycle because of the dry sand right???

what do you mean to cook live rock????. you put the lv in your tank. let it cylce fo 4-6 weeks ,untill amonia, nitrite and nitate are zero. good idea to have a good protein skimmer running on your tank too. you do not need to turn lights on while you are curing your lv rock.
you set up the quarantine tank like you do a normal tank. a filter (box filter is easy. seed you qt with some media from your display tank (spong or any other media like carbon bag or some sand in a bag) same ph and salinity , heater and some hidding place for fish to feel secure . no gravel. you acclimate your fish to your qt tank slowly by putting the fish in a bucket and dripping water slowley for an hour or so. then scoop the fish with net and put it in your tank qt. keep it there for 4-6 weeks . do not feed to much. keep your eye on the fish and water quality, if sick treat the fish . do regular water changes on your qt tank on weekly bases. after 4-6 weeks. put the fish in bucket and acclimate it to your regular display tank. do not put the media or water from qt in your display tank. clean and disinfect the qt tank ,net ,filter and etc (air dry for a very long time will also kill the bacteria or parasite). it is good idea to have seperate net ,bucket and etc for qt and not use your display tank stuff. also in your display tank always keep a small spong , (like hagen aqua clear sponges, they are cheap, you can get it in a pet shops in bulk or on line) ,so you will always have a ready seeded filter media in case you want to set the qt tank again for the next fish, this way your qt will not have to go through cyling and stress your fish more. throw away the spong they are very cheap. it sounds complicated ,but it is not once you get the hang of it. good luck . jakleen
