What do you think about these LEDs?

Well if I had an extra 900 laying around I would try it on a frag tank I would be cautious getting one for a deep display yet. It would be nice to get one and test it though.

There was a post about these a while back. I forget the end result, but I do remember someone commenting on this line from the site:

14 to 16 hours per day is all that is necessary for maximum fish metabolism

Didn't know that fish needed light for metabolism. ;)

Actually, try a search on the phrase above... that might help you locate it.

I'd guess that this is the thread you are talking about...

The product linked in the two is actually different although it is the same site. The panel under discussion now is 36 LEDs that are 40W total (or a little over 1 watt/LED). The panel they are talking about appears to be 225 LEDs that are 13W total (that doesn't even seem possible).

I'm not sure how that effects the discussion of how bright these would be, but my hunch is that it still isn't enough light for good coral growth. They probably would make a killer sump/fuge light or even as a supplement to some other type of lighting (e.g., to add shimmer to a tank running T5's).

In general I would say it is pretty surprising how little research seems to be available regarding LEDs and their suitability for reef tanks. Probably because the current technology that is up to snuff is still too expensive to be a legitimate DIY proposition for anything but small/shallow tanks.

As the son of an electrician and a person who became fully aware of how much electricity his fish tanks were burning when he took down his tank, it is clear that even expensive LEDs are probably more "worth it" than most people think... you just have to bring out the wallet up front and you have to keep the same lighting setup for long enough for them to payoff.

I'm not really up to speed on LED's at all but my brother's boat has 2 LED pods on the back under the water line that light up probably at least a 6' diameter area for swimming at night. Its pretty cool and I never really thought about how they might work for the aquarium but I can say they're definitely bright.

It's clear that LED's will be the lighting of the future for everything (it's even starting to replace CF bulbs for home lighting) but the technology still has a ways to go. The fact is, they are bright (stare straight into a LED christmas light) but often their lenses concentrate the light so they don't have as high an output as you think and reef lighting is on a whole different plane.

True that, we are talking actual photons here and not how "bright" the light looks, since wattage and lumens are kinda inaccurate for leds we would have to rely on PAR readings to really tell if they are gonna "metabolize some fish" hehehehe

basically they are 1 watt each, 40 leds and 40 watts, i didnt see a driver for them either, imo they are low output and not suitible for coral growth

Oh and I suppose you think that is a picture of football players in your avatar. :)

But they would work to grow fish right

i have the 225 red/purple LED light i got from them off their ebay page. it was suppose to be $37 shipped, but i had a paypal coupon for 1/2 price off purchases under $50, so i got it for $18.50 :D

i am gonna have it on the sump over the cheato. figure it is designed as a hydroponic grow light for plants, so it should work well for the cheato. also very low electricity usage, long bulb life & practically zero heat added to the tank.....all that for less than $20, i might as well give it a try LOL

peep this post for pics of it in action :)
