Another idea may be to setup a tank in say a hospital or museum or something like that. There's been plenty of tanks for sale on here lately and I'm sure we could all donate some stuff to it. Then we can hang a huge sign on it saying if you're interested in setting up a SW tank please check out www.girs. etc..... you get the idea.

Just wanted to make sure this did not go unnoticed. You get a tank set up at a hospital or zoo or something like that and I will join GIRS (and you can probably get me to donate stuff and time too). Having spent a LOT of time in Blank and in UofI Children's hospital over the last year, there is definately an opportunity there. And I would think the free advertising, interest in saltwater fish, and goodwill (not to mention the joy you would bring to kids) would more than make up for it. Heck, there is already a reef tank on one of the floors in Iowa City that is just screaming to be fixed up. It looks like Hung might maintain it but there is almost nothing in it. Obviously, there are some practical issues that would need to be figured out as far as routine cleaning, top-offs, etc. Even the Blank Park Zoo looks like it could use another reef tank somewhere. That might be another opportunity to get your name out there.

I'll tell ya what.. I have a pretty big Green slimer and some other corals I would donate to the club... Probably would donate 20-30 frags.

I was thinking that when someone pays dues they get a free frag This way it sort of offsets the $20 membership and it's a nice welcome gift. I think this should only apply to people who have never joined the club in the past to entice new members.

The only thing I ask is that I can give the corals to someone, I have a busy schedule and wouldn't want to deal with handing out frags on a regular basis.

I don't do much for the club on the political side so this would be my way of contributing.

If it sounds like a good idea to everyone, I could give them to somone before the frag auction, since I won't be going.

I live across the street from the u of i hospital and i could help maintain it, if something were to ever go up there. Let me know

I think the dues are fine as is..

I would think that a club frag tank could create problems if guidlines were not laid out well. Most of the serious reefers in the area have a fairly good stock list anyway, but if there was a must have piece that someone wanted to frag out as a re-seed I'm sure they would find many suitable homes to take it.

Maybe the club could go in on a basic or more exotic coral depending on the reefers experience and give it to a new member as a sort of welcome package. If not livestock maybe we could come up with something else to welcome them into the club.

I think the dues are just fine where they are, they've been like this for years why change them now, we have money. Personally I think it's time we spend alittle bit of that cash on something other then speakers and such.

I've never liked the idea of "donating" and tank to a hostpital, not that I dont think it would be worth it, mainly because things happen in life, people get busy and I'd hate to see it become a burdon rather than a reward. I do however think it would be an awesome idea to donate a club wide frag pack to the zoo, this would insure the animals were taken care of by professionals and hundreds of thousands of people would get to see what were really about.

As for the frag tank idea, I like it but I don't see it happening logistically, mainly because it has to be in one spot hooked into a system and it's kinda like putting all your eggs in one basket, if something happened everything is lost.

I do think that buying colonies and breaking them up among the members is a great idea, even if everyone dropped 5 or 10 bucks and the club dropped a couple hundred on a club wide group order a few times a year, I'm sure we could get some decent deals from vendors.

Setting up a tank in a business could be legal trouble. What would happen if it broke or caused damage to their property and they blamed the club?

As great as the advertising would be for the club I think it might be better to leave that to the tank maintenence business

I knew if I threw it out there someone would have better ideas!

I love the idea of donating/maintaining a tank in a hospital/zoo/somewhere...get some exposure and share our obsession with those who don't have the time/patience/money/knowledge to keep up a tank. EDIT - I was writing this before a couple other posted...obviously there would be some things to work out, and I also wouldn't want it to become a burden, but I think it could be pretty cool if everything fell into place.

I also like the idea of buying colonies to frag for the club (or the couple people who get together and put the $$ in)...and I also appreciate JJ's willingness to donate some corals to have for giving to new members. I think that's a cool idea, and if we had a couple colonies in different peoples frag tanks (probably some in DM, some in eastern iowa) then members could have a choice and maybe work out a 50/50 split for the club/overseer for any frags of those colonies that are sold.

It sounds like there's enough interest in this for anyone who makes it to the frag swap to discuss and iron out the details...

Ohh yeah by the way everyone who was willing to pay more dues, all you have to do to make that happen is make the check bigger. I am pretty sure that GIRS would accept the extra donation.

Speaking of which, when are the dues due?

We have kicked around the idea of sponsored tanks before and we kept comming to the same issues... Who will maintain the tank. Will they be paid to do it? Who pays to stock it and keep it running? There is actually a lot of background expense with a tank that not many places would want to budget for and I don't know if the club would want to pay to maintain a tank long term.

Sorry, that last post took forever to pop up... My internet is jacked tonight...

I do hope we can get the club sponsored frag fest started, but I would really like to encourge everyone to start sharing amongst yourselves. It is like paying it forward. You may give a newbie a shroom today and he/she may end up being an anemone farmer later and you get a rose BTA back later...

here's my beef with dues - $20 is fine but I don't have time or opportunity to go to events so a raise would be beyond my expense level (hell I am not sure I am even current).

Hey guys - you should buy a bunch of colonies and prepare a "GIRS" table at the frag swap. take said colonies and frag them.... buy with some money from the treasury then sell for enough to cover the purchase plus some more..... of course this idea may be too late....

The only bad thing I can see comming from this is supply and demand, if theres a bunch of people that would buy up the colony it would be a good investment, but if the frags don't sell where would they be kept. If you had several colonies of frags that could start adding up to alot of corals, they could go into someones frag tank but then were back to the "frag tank" issue. I think we should stick to buying the colonies and giving the frags to members, if only 5 people show up to the meeting 5 people got some nice BIG frags, might boost attendance

I think the best thing to do is list the amount the club has and what was used throughout the year and for what. I am guessing there is almost what was left when I was a board member which was quite a bit. With that cash a good speaker is definately worth it. Also they help bring money with auctioning off signed books.

Frag swaps/speakers/and tours helped that club grow and I think they would continue to. Mike Paletta, Scott Michael, Anthony Calfo, and Mitch Carl were some of the biggest turn outs. We did those speakers pretty cheap too. We split calfo with 3 other clubs so his flight was 1/3. Michael drove and so did Carl. Paletta flew but I think the trip was welll worth it.

Most colonies retail are wild and are hard enough to keep let alone chopping them up right away, Maricultured give you some size but your still hard pressed to get anything off them.

What if everyone who attended a meeting brought a frag of an agreed on type, at the end of the meeting names were drawn or everyone just picked a bag as long as it wasn't theirs. It would be a way to get a new coral with out really spending anything.

As long as they don't mind flying economy and are willing to fly United, I will gladly fly in at least one speaker a year and could probably be talked into two of them.

Agreed, there are lots of issues to consider.

One of the things I mentioned in my post is that a tank already exists in the UofI Children's hospital. It just sucks. I wouldn't think it would be that hard/expensive to spruce it up a little bit. Someone is already maintaining it. I sat around the waiting room for hours one day and I think 2/3 of the people who passed through stopped and peered into the tank. They were amazed at "how wonderful" the tank was as I was thinking to myself that it was looking kinda pathetic.

I think the zoo would be a good idea too because, hopefully, they would be able to maintain it. They are probably also not afraid or too proud to acknowledge donors.

If hung is maintaining it, maybe he would let us help out & put our name on it.

Lets leave that up to the board for now as that is something that could use a little deliberation.

Due prices are fine, actually cheap if you ask me, I have been around for over 2 years now, maybe 3 not sure, anyways...I'm still not a member just because I'm always busy and never able to attend the meetings, besides I go through my phases of interest then boredom with hobbies (3 years in this is actually amazing for me)
When i graduate in december and get a real job and place to put up a bigger tank, i will be in the club, and hopefully an even more active member.

I would actually pay more then 20 bucks but I think that 20 is just right...ever thought about "donation" boxes at the area meetings and such? Not sure since i've never been to a meeting! lol

anyways.....
