Every clowns personality is different. Adventurers and homebodies. Hosters and night swimmers. But to answer the question, a little bit of both. They are not too picky...breeders keep them in a 40G tank with a clay pot and/or a tile to host and breed on and that's all...no sand, no lr, not tankmates...just them. A mixture of both places, a few overhangs, some crevices, a couple flowing corals or an anem(wait for a while if you decide to get one to feel out your tank) and a few open areas for them to check out is a great solution. They don't require rock work like a tang that has to be somewhat specialized...they are fine with what you give them, provided you take care of them.
