What does everyone use for stand pipes now adays.

New tank has 1 large over flow with 2 drains and 2 returns in it. Don't know what everyone uses now a days for drain stand pipes or are Durso stand pipes still the main use?

I use a Durso on my 55 and a modified Herbie on my 185. I like the Herbie style much better as it handles more flow and is dead silent for me. I first ran dual Durso', but the flow was violent and noisy, but my stand pipes are 34" tall for a 38" tall tank, Herbie works great!

This is similar to how I am set up on the 185, it looks like a Durso but without the air holes and the secondary or emergency standpipe is just above the surface. I am also using gate valves for precision flow adjustment and NOT the rotten ball valves.

This is also a Herbie design:

I think with 4 holes I would look into a Bean Animal drain.
If the 2 return holes are smaller in diameter use them both for the emergency.

I have this same set up and use the Herbie method: gate valve the main, fully-submerged drain; straight pipe just above or right at the surface without a valve for emergency; and split return on ball valves. Works great, quiet and gives me a piece of mine that I won't overflow.

I run a straight standpipe with a maggie-muffler and a single return on my other tank -- it's not as quiet as the herbie method. I have a gate valve on that return-line too just to have some control. Let me know if you'd like more details or pictures (I think have some from when I set-up).

Doing the Herbie just hell tring to find a gate valve will probably go with the true union ball valve at Lowes. With the sump I picked up I can run both of the drains straight down into sump will work perfect.

Thanks for replys

ACE Hardware at Broadway and Rural has gate valves for like $14 (1.25"). Also, any ACE will order them for you with a short wait time.
Gate valves are almost a must for this application IME!

Actually went to that Ace today all they had was 1/2 and 3/4.
The drain is 1" so need a 1" gate. Will stop back tomorrow and see about ordering 1

I wouldn't waste your energy or money on the ball valves for the herbie. You'll eventually want to replace it with a gate valve anyway. I tried that on an old set up several years ago and it was one of those live and learn moments. Worth waiting a few days to get the right valve, IMO.

As far as I can tell, the Bean is a Herbie with one more safety pipe. I did bean, gate valve from Ace in Tempe.. dead silent, best setup available..

I run durso on my 220 and bean animal on my 55.. If i could do it all over again the 220 would also have a bean animal!!!!

They even had a 1.5" Gate valve that I used for my new build. Was very surprised they had that in stock. Nice to have a place like thaat in town though.

Went back to Ace to order a couple and of course their internet was down so cant even look it up so give up on in town going with Amazon or Marine depot I guess.
.
Was looking at the 3/4" one they did have at Ace and looks very restrictive in side are the 1" and 1 1/4" the same way and if so do you have to go bigger than your drain size to get the flow out of it?
