Im sorry if I have newbie questions, but this is the only photography forum I know of.

Pre-hand, I'm fairly certain is a typo for free-hand; i.e. not on a tripod.

The "kit" is a set of three differently sized extension tubes that can be used individually or together. They can get you really good magnification but you end up with a really short working distance. It's not always practical to be 2" from your subject.
