what ever happened to Micromussa

So its been a while since I had time to follow the boards and stay on top of the latest. Seems like 2005-2008 micros were all the rage and now they are gone. A few vendors still have them. But nothing like back in the day. Have they been renamed/classified or did they just fade away

See if this pic works

Pic looks like a favite which are often lumped into the "brain" or "closed brain" common name category. Is micromussa a species name? Coral sellers are known to be loose with common names sometimes. But not sure.

Actually a family name

Actually, it's not.

Family: Mussidae
Genus: Micromussa
Species: minuta, diminuta, and amakusensis

The main difference difference between Micromussa and Acanthastrea is the corallite size. Most vendors will not measure the corallite to identify the correct genus, so many Micromussa get sold under the Acanthastrea label.

Right...
So based on the direction this has gone.."what is micromussa, common name or..." I shall assume they have just faded away. Too bad

I see them for sale from time to time, but no, i don't see any stocking for them like there is a craze.

Wow, those are beautiful corals. It's surprising to me they would loose favor in the market place, unless there were issues with collecting sites, the supply chain or regulations on collecting them.

I have a micromusa just like one of the above. They are nice. And mine grows pretty quick. Got a tiny frag, it's grown considerably in just 3mos.

I have a black and red micromusa (I was told). I bought from KeithT4 years ago before he got out and moved. If you search his user name, you'll probably find it. I didn't buy that one in his for sale thread, but did buy a frag of that exact coral, previous to that thread. I was later told, it was an acan by someone, (not sure if he's right). I don't know what it is, but I bought it as a micomusa, Keith sold it as a micromusa too. I've had it for years now. I never see anything labeled micromusa anymore either.

I'm not sure why they're not more popular considering how well Acans have done in the hobby. I recently bought 4 different varieties from Cultivated Reef. I really like them so far, but they have a lot of growing to do yet. Glad to hear about essencereefer's growth in just a few month's time.
