What exactly is a phosphate reactor, and how does it work??

Ive been reefing for a number of years, and have returned to the hobby after a 5 year break.

Since I've returned I've seen a lot said about phosphate reactors. What is it and how exactly does it work??

All it is basically is a tube formatted so that, with the use of a small water-pump that pushes around 100gph or so, water is efficiently directed throught the reactor into which some phosphate reducing medium is placed, and then back to the tank...or sump. Using a reactor like that ensures that the water from your system that's run through it will be exposed fully to the medium that you use.
