Hey folks,

iam looking for a nice little fish to spice up my nano :) would be a cool thing if it moves in the open water..for its dimensions 15.75x17.7x17.7 there is a lot of swiming room..

any suggestions?

thanks! :dance:

What do you have already?

Check out a midas blenny sometime, they are really fun to watch and spend a lot of time swimming in the open rather than hiding.

a healthy pair of red scooter blennys..

yea a blenny is always nice :D a more active fish would also be cool..

I would avoid the scooter blenny, it's actually a dragonette, not a blenny, and they can be picky eaters, similar to a mandarin. A pair isn't really a great idea for a nano and they don't swim in open water, ever. They perch on rocks.

yeah i know - i already have them, it was my answer to your question what i already have :) as they perch on the rocks i want a fish for the open water..

mine both eath almost everything i throw in and have nice bellies..

i already had a pair of grammas in my old tank - in my opinion they get sick quiet easily..but ill think about them too :)

well the priciest fish ive ever bought was a p. navarchus for which i paid 150$..

but iam not willing to pay more than 100$..

how about a p. fridmani/aldabarensis/fridmani sankeyi hybrid or something?

Isnt your tank kinda small for any kind of blenny? I have a 20g as well but I'm afraid to put one in that'll grow too big. You could always try some kind of small goby. Hector and rainford gobys are cool. If you're set on a dottyback, i really like the diadem one or a black cap but both of those i heard can be very territorial.

My suggestions will swim around, but not constantly. And, of course, I don't have a real good idea of what is available to you. People suggest grammas here, and they are a dime a dozen; I would guess they are a bit more expensive over there.

Anyway, over here ORA is producing captive bred Assessors, and they are great fish that stay small and are peaceful. You likely have more access to wild caught ones than we ever did. I love my yellow assessor. They do like caves, but once at home in your tank, I have found that mine is regularly out and about.

Another fish that I am very fond of and that would work in a small tank is the blue stripe pipefish. I know you can sometimes get captive bred pipes over there, but I don't believe that is one of the species that has been bred. The ones out of Africa are very colorful. They stay quite small and will swim all over, although sometimes they will be out of view because they will be peering into holes in the rock and such.

Another possibility is a citron goby. They are a little bit larger than the coral gobies, and I found that my citron was very personable -- often would perch right on the front glass and actually swam in the water column a lot more than most of my other gobies. He almost never laid on the substrate like your scooters do.

Oh, another possibility, if you are able to get them, would be a Vanderbilt chromis. 2" and very peaceful. I think that they are quite attractive, but they aren't screaming colorful.

There is no way that I would get a diadem dottyback -- they are incredibly aggressive. I'm not sure if an orchid would work in such a small tank or not; the captive bred orchids are suppose to be the most passive of the dottybacks, although I owned a very friendly Springer's that I kept in a tank a bit bigger than yours.

Let us know what you decide to get.

Cryptic Wrasse (although a bit secretive, they do come out and swim) Yasha Goby, Dracula Goby, Gold Assesor, Neon Goby, Candy Basslet, Small Shoal of Blue/Green Reef Chromis, Neon Or Orchid Dottyback

@Elysia

thanks for taking so much time :)

Grammas are pretty cheap here too.

I´ll ask my dealer for an Assessor, never seen one in store yet..yellow fish are always welcome :D

The blue stripe fish are also very tempting - the nano mostly houses sps, could it be too much flow for pipefish? Also they would compete for food with my scooter dragonette´s i guess.

As for the citron goby - I don´t really like them - dunno why.

Vanderbilt chromis definatly has something - I don´t remember seeing them around here, but i didn´t look for them so I´ll check them out.

@kev

I don´t like the looks of the Cryptic..

Any chance for a dwarf angel or something?

So we have Grammas, Midas Blenny, Orchid Dottyback/Neon Dottyback(they would be captive bred), Assessor, Blue Stripe Pipefish and Vanderblit chromis - nice collection but still a tough decision..

You could try a cherub angel or a flameback if you want an angel. I might get one for my tank around the same size as your's

Bangaii Cardinal pair. A very elegant small fish that is always in the water column. I call it the "small tank man's moorish idol".

There are a ton of really cool Japanese gobies... And if u can add a few inverts maybe a pair of harlequin shrimp... U know, I met this dude in japan that had a 20gal nano and 1" fishes all up in it-- baby multiple colored angels, baby flame angels, baby lemon peel angels, a golden angel.

Other than the chromis, I endorse this list!

Another great suggestion. But if you get a pair, be sure you have a male and female or you will only have one.
