What happen to the price of clams?

I went into a lfs and the clam prices were outrageous! It's been 4-5 years since I bought my last clam but it wasn't nearly $150-$190. Am I crazy? Are they? I'm looking for a small clam but used to pay $30-50 for them.

Anyone know where I can get one in the cheaper end?

There was a bleaching event last summer at a major mariculture facility...and there are a lot of restrictions on collecting them from the wild.

I experienced the same at my local supplier and I asked.. They advised me that (and this was last year, early 2016),the clean prices had shot up ,mainly because a lot of the suppliers that used to be in the aquarium trade, basically sold a lot of their holdings to the food trade industry conglomerates(just like a lot of other industries).. This, from what was explained to me, caused a shortage in our industry, as from what they advised me, dropped the suppliers from double digit to lower single digit figures.. And the supplier's them began selling clams that they "could" get or culture at basically the same price regardless of size (another thing I noticed as my supplier used to also sell babies for around 50 to 60, but now, the lowest are in the 100.00 to 125.00 range)..

But, i went to my dealer about a month and a half ago, and I saw they had some smaller ones for 65.00, so I'm not sure exactly what changed, but that was a very welcome drop (I got a smile and confirmation of relief from the owner also as he loves clams). I lost my blue not too long ago, so I'm hoping to pick up a brown or black and white one over the next couple months..

Another thing that shot up were baby sharks.. Around the same time.. But im hoping for other aquarists that this goes down also..

YourReef has them above 6 inches in size for $99 in their displays in Roseville. Great looking clams.

I've been doing ORA Group buys up here in SLO county through Coastal Aquariums. We just finished the winter one a few weeks ago, Gold Maximas were $28, first grade blues were $32, extra large derasa's (11-12cm) were $72. Most people have been stocking up on clams when we do the group buy. We'll probably do it again during the middle of the summer. It will be posted on our FB group. http://www.facebook.com/groups/805marineaquariumclub/

Looks like you're in Santa Cruz? If you guys are serious and can meet the minimum livestock order from ORA, I can see if my LFS will do a group buy for you guys. Only thing, you guys would have to come pick up the order the day it arrives at the shop in Arroyo Grande. But I guarantee you won't find prices cheaper on ORA stuff. It's pretty close to 50% off on live aquaria prices.
