What happened here??

My girlfriend recently brought home some coral she got from the LFS and I had never seen it before (I'm new to saltwater, she has some experience). Within 48 hours quite a transformation took place that I'm sure isn't good. I'm going to post some before, during, and after transformation pictures and I hope someone can help explain what it is she brought home and what in the world happened to it.

Cant be sure on what exactly it was but it spewed its guts and was picked clean by your CUC over night it seems.

Test your water........ Best advice I can give you.

Thanks Mock, it tested fine but I don't think I trust my testing kit. I'l take it to the LFS and have it tested.

It looks kind of like a blastomussa coral though unopened. FWIW

What did you test for and what are the readings? Either the coral was on it's way out when you got it or something in your water is way off.

+1. I think it was partially dead at your LFS. Did you dip the coral before adding it to your tank and did you acclimate it your tank and lights?

I'm not sure what you mean by dip but I floated the coral for 30 minutes under low level light. Figured if I floated them under the 10k it would have fried them.

tested at the LFS and they as well are puzzled. They seemed to think my water was more than adequate, liked my water flow as well and lighting so who knows.

Dip as in, FW dip or Lugol's coral dip.... That kind of dip.

I did not dip it. Had never heard of it but now have researched and that makes a lot of sense. I have taken in more data about this hobby over the past 6 months and apparently have a ton more of data to take in. Thanks,

For the future you need to start dipping your corals if you cannot put them in some kind of observation tank. It's recommended that you quarantine corals also. In your case if you cannot, you need to dip the corals in saltwater out of the tank using Revive, Coral Rx, or Lugols, just to name a few. Once that is done you place the coral in the tank on the sandbed, IMO so it can acclimate to your light, and gradually move it up to it's final destination. Corals are sensitive, just can't throw them in a tank and think they are going to be fine.
