I walked away from my tank and returned an hour later and saw this.

Did it left the shell and got caught in that brown stuff?

I don't see the shell nowhere around. What fish do you have in the tank. He could have just died or could have been trying to go into a bigger shell, but didn't make it.

OK, I gonna count my hermit crabs again.

This is funny... HOW Would you do this.. My crabs.. some come out at night, some feeding time some random times. I have a few that climb in out of the over flow box.... how do you count them.......

It could be molt or a bigger crab took its shell.. I am suspecting molt because my snails and worms will eat anything dead or not moving..

Small tank, limited hiding spots. Start at 1 and work your way up from there. ;)

I only have 4 and they are extremely active in cleaning my rocks. I also have 4 bumble bee snails. They are also very active despite of what I have read about them. The bumble bees roam around quite a bit and they are eating away that brown stuff.

Anyway, I found the 4. False alarm. I like my blue legged crabs :)

I can identify a few of them by there habits and shell shape but for the most part i do not even try... I love watching the inverts .

I know you didnt ask but I'd superglue over those polyps sticking up in your pic. They will blanket your rocks eventually
