What happened to Orange Cap?

My Orange Cap expelled its zooanthelle (sp?) overnight. It was fine last night - woke up this morning to huge white spot spreading from center out.

Took a couple of pics - everything else in tank looks happy.






and no, haven't tested parameters yet, nothing unusual, normal upkeep schedule with water change and dosing on Sat.


had time this am to frag off some of still orange parts and moved them to another corner to see if they make it - didn't notice anything on the underneath


think my yellow leather zapped it?

I have a piece of the same orange cap. If yours does not make it, I will get you another. The frag won't be big, but at least you have the same coral.

I did manage to save a 4x2 in piece - thank goodness I stopped to frag off a couple of pieces before I had to leave from work - by the time I got home that afternoon the rest of the coral all the way up to the back of the tank was white

I guess it was a chemical war with the leather as my green cap was fine and all the pieces without any white that I fragged off and moved are ok so far

I just can't believe how quickly it happened

Just curious since I'm hoping to mix...how close was the leather? Do you have a lot of flow? I'm such a dummy on this...

gatorolsen sorry to hear this, but glad to here you reacted quick enough to save a frag of it.

I had the same problem mine got zapped by a zoathid polyp :-(, but I didn't react as quick as you did. I lost it all. It was a red Montipora cap.


ladyfsu Mine was very close. I had a single polyp that got loose some how and attached itself right next to the cap. I have a mixed tank and that has been the only problem. From my exsperiance I would keep them far away form each other. One you don't want to take the chance and 2 they are both growing so when they finally really look nice and big you will have to move or frag it. JMO

I had several frags moved around the tank - only the one made it - other caps in tank were fine - I thought it was weird that the white areas started from the center and moved outwards instead of starting near the leather

the leather and the cap had been next to each other for 2 years and I had just planned on keeping that side fragged from actually touching the leather but I didn't expect an overnight chemical warfare- sucks but interesting in a way

To me that looks like RTN.

Roger for a zoa touching a cap and killing it - must have been a very small frag. I've had zoas touch just about everything - might get a little white spot but they've always recovered.

What's RTN?

Rapid tissue necrosis - if this is what it is, it kills the coral with in a few days. Get a frag now to hopefully save a piece.

Lots of articles on RTN and really the reason for it is still unknown. This is such a young hobby and we have so much to learn about the livestock we keep.

It wasn't a frag it was a 6x4 peice. the polyps that got it was a large button polyp. I could actually see the stinging happen. I thought it would recover also but by the time I got home from work there was nothing left.

The problem is obviously work. If we didn't go to work, we could stay home with our tanks and make sure nothing happens to our beautiful undersea dioramas.
