What Happened??

Kermit

The administrator of Reefcentral removed your post. It was nothing to do with anyone in COMAS. I think you are placing blame on the wrong people.

Paul.

Sounds like another good reason to have discussion forums on the COMAS website. Here's an example one from a reef club in Vegas....

http://www.vegasreefers.com/forums/

I think it could bring in more sponser money from stores and vendors (hint hint, nudge nudge, wink wink...).

Sorry Paul, don't mean to stir things up, just shooting it out there...

G.

apart from selling items, there is no reason to establish a new forum.

There are a number of reasons to stay here. some but not all are:

1: People find reefcentral way before they find COMAS
2: If you post a problem in this forum it gets viewed by thousands of people, many of whom respond.
3: If you post a sale, there is more chance of it being sold to someone outside our immediate circle.
4: most of us subcribe to multiple threads/forums-not just COMAS
5: we dont waste bandwidth of the COMAS website.

I have no objection to setting up a for sale section on the COMAS website---if Paul Thompson is willing to do so, but I would not be in favor of doing a separate forum.

Paul.

If we did a sales section on our forum we could open it up to the COMAS-friendly/sponsoring stores to also advertise any specials they may have, or incoming shipments....

So long as it benefits the club members, Im all for it

Just a thought.

A selling forum on the COMAS sound like a good idea. I think it would free up threads on RC for actual aquatic discussions. Tell me what do you think of this idea.. Having a forum for each store to sell or advertise specials on. Each respective forum would be totally sponsered by that store. This would pay for that extra bandwidth your are concerned with.

Gary

Obviously I posted that last reply before I say Paul's right before it. Paul, you can sign me up for sponsoring an ART forum when this would ever get going.

Gary

Bandwidth really isn't an issue with the MYCOMAS host. Last I checked, 1 terabyte per month is allowed.

The kicker would be maintenance. Once you start adding dynamic content to a website, such as forums, you run into more and more time required in order to keep things running. Since the site is run and maintained on a volunteer basis, you have to consider all the who's and what's. As the site gets more complicated, who is going to maintain the site once PT decides not too any more? If the site remains 'simple', you open to door to more and more people with the ability to update and add information. You begin adding PHP and Pearl scripting, that window gets smaller and smaller.

While I do support the adding of a 'for sale' function to the website, I think we need to be careful how complicated the site becomes.
Just my two cents (which isn’t worth even that much).

Great idea. Paul T would be very happy to set this up, Right Paul T? <big evil grin>

I am sure Gary would give you a frag or two to get it set up. Right Gary? <bigger evil grin>

Thank you Kermit41 for serving our country in this time of war. I hope all goes well for you in your new assignment.

Much agreed. While I'm no PHP guru, I have a created a couple sites, but I just used a PHP NUKE program to make my forum. Couldnt you make the forum delete old posts, and maintain itself automatically?

Let's halt the previous 2 posts discussion before it goes any further.

Kermit,

As was already mentioned, the rules of RC have zero to do with COMAS. Your posts were removed by a moderator for violating the 50 post rule of RC.

As to our reasoning for the rule, you can probably imagine with 100K+ members
the incidences of fraud, thievery and general unfriendly selling practices has gone up dramatically. Unfortunately, RC is not Ebay or PayPal, we have no enforcement arm for when a deal goes bad. So we do our best to protect members and the 50 post (and 3 month) rule was put in place to do just that.

RC is primarly an information site, not Craigslist or a internet garage sale. We do not exist as a clearning house for selling goods. So we've always discouraged people that join here simply to sell something. The 50 post +3 month rule forces new people to actually participate, get to know other people and most importantly, give other people a chance to learn about you.

Will I but something from a seller on Ebay with 0 Feedback and joined last week? Not a chance. But it he's got 50 feedback and been there a while, yea, I probably will.

Believe it or not, we did have a situation happen where a new member was leaving to Iraq on assignment and had a quick fire sale. Somehow, whether intended or not, a few people got burned and paid for equipment and got nothing before he got deployed. And it's kind of hard to collect on him now.

That's the logic. And I'm sorry you got caught in it during this time of transition.

Thanks for serving. Stay safe.
