What I did today

Even though I'm no longer a member of the club, I wanted to do something to stimulate interest. I'm offering a free frag, my choice (but you can influence my decision) to the first bona fide ETRC club member who can name the rock I climbed today in this picture, including its location and state (assuming it is even in the US). Hint: If you save the picture to your harddrive and zoom in closely, you'll see people in the picture and possibly other clues as to where this is. Good luck, and if no one guesses in 24 hours, I'll post another clue.

Good luck and please no non-local guesses.

Dave

Thats one heck of a rock to be climbing Dave... :D I hope you took some pics from the top...

Jeff is really close, but as I originally stated, I need 3 pieces of information for a fully correct guess. The name of the rock/mountain/formation, the location, and the state where it is located. Don, you didn't really think I'd pull a stock google photo and make it that easy, did you?

It is indeed in the SW part of the US in a National Park. Here's another picture near the top showing how you get up using the chain handholds and the 1000'+ drops on either side, with the "trail" only 6' wide in places and drops on either side. Very exposed and a bit scary for someone scared of heights like me. I hiked up the knife ridge you see in the picture holding on for dear life most of the trip.

Keep the guesses coming...

OK, to my earlier entry, I'll add the guess that it's the Navajo Sandstone Formation. The Navajo has that characteristic red to it that you see in the photos. Although, the lighter stuff on top looks like it could be limestone... I suppose it could also be the Toroweap Sandstone Formation underneath the Kaibab Limestone Formation. But my first guess would be the Navajo.

OK... so if by formation you didn't mean it in the formal sense, I'll hazard a further guess that it's the Angel's Landing trail in Zion N.P., Utah.

Do we have a winner?

I have a 6 am flight tomorrow and I'm doing this the night before. Does that define "reef whore" or what?

Jeff

We have a winner! Angel's Landing in Zion, hence the two biblical references. Navajo sandstone is correct, but not certain of the other geology. Of all the hikes I've done in my life, this is numero uno followed closely by Long's Peak in Colorado. If you ever are in the area, DO IT! The trail up is gnarly and kicks your you know what in 2.5 miles. You'll be exhausted and probably won't want to go to the top after seeing what you're in for, but force yourself up. There were 10 year olds going up, and dammit, I wasn't about to be outdone by a 10 year old, so up I went. If you don't look over the edge, its not so bad. Oh, and so awe inspiring and overwhelming, I am so glad I forced myself up.

Jeff, give me a call (Sarah can get my number off of WHOS) and LMK when you'd like to come claim your prize. Anything I can frag you're welcome to so long as it is large enough. Hope you all enjoyed the little game!

Dave

OK, winner gets to take up the thread and post the next location. Same ground rules - any club member (or Dave, since he started it) who guesses correctly gets a frag from my tank.

This is a place where I've been doing a lot of field work lately. It's not a well known location, but once you find it, you will know you have found it.

More clues and images to follow if no one gets it...
