Horrible picture but what in the world is this? It looks like some mussel but don't know if it is. Please help, I don't know if it is a bad thing or not. thanks

Its most likely a clam species and would be considered harmless, they do however require phytoplankton and other very small particulates to feed upon.

It's a true mussel. It's not a sand-dwelling species though, its preferred habitat is in a somewhat sheltered area attached to one of your rocks.
