My only thoughts are that it is regular inflation/deflation behavior to exchange with the surrounding water, probably combined with egestion (do you feed it?). Mine has done something similar to this--if it hasn't killed it in nine years, then I doubt that it is a serious problem, if a problem at all.

mine does the same thing all the time. i freaked when a saw the skeleton threw its gapping mouth. but it always returns to normal. it seems to be triggered when i turn the pumps off to feed. maybe it has somthing to do with a reaction to low oxygen or flow levels?
