What is a bot?

I tried to update my signature today and the system here wouldn't accept it, says I must answer "are you a bot?" What does that mean?

Say that you are not a bot. A bot is a robot, or automated registering script. People who want to create a ton of accounts for malicious reasons use them.

What if you have no clue what that question is getting at and you just put down the name of your favorite coral. It works! Are there any repercussions for doing that, or does it really not matter, as long as it works?
