A closed loop is a pump that draws water from your tank and returns it back to the tank in several places. No sump required. I draw from the bottom rear and return it to seswirls on top to add current . You must drill your tank to install one. Drill the apropriate sized hole for a bulkhead fitting. Add some sort of screen so tank inhabitants arent drawn into the pump . Run pipe from the intake to the pump(external pump required)then from the pump to several locations either top water or midwater. You can eliminate drilling another hole if you dump back in over top of the tank. For a cleaner look, drill holes in glass for the return lines as well(more bulkhead fitting required). hope this helps
