What is a Closed-Loop System

Can someone please explain to me what a Closed Loop System is, or send a link that describes them?

Thanks.

Hi,
A closed loop system is where you drain water from your tank (via bulkhead, siphon etc.) and the water goes DIRECTLY into the inlet of a pump.
This pump then pumps the water back into your main tank through hardfast PVC, sea swirls, spray bars, however you want to make it return.
The advantages of this is you get to increase your flow and increase it in areas not serviced by your return pump or powerheads.
Also, if you have a power outtage, no additional water goes into your sump as this is a closed circuit.

The disadvantages are buying a new pump, possibility of extra heat, electrical costs, and of course, the PITA of doing more plumbing. :)

So why not just put in another powerhead and place it so it flows in areas not serviced by existing the powerheads or sump return?

Its just what Sean stated, the reason is that it can add extra water movement to you tank so you can remove some of the clutter inside you tank like extra powerheads etc...It can give you the flow you need plus it cleans up the look of the inside of your tank so you dont have as many powerheads and wire running within your tank.

Because powerheads are ugly. :)
