What is a good lense?

I tried taking some pics of my coral today with my wife's Nikon D60 with a 18-55 mm lense and they didn't come out very well. They weren't very crisp. What is a good lense to buy or is it just operator error?

Most likely a little of both. While the 18 to 55 isn't made to take macros you should be able to get some pics. Look through this.

Posting the image would be helpful in diagnosing what went wrong.

Probably a user error (sorry!) The 18-55 kit lens can take very "decent" closeups. You need to be shooting on a tripod if you haven't already. Your lens should be parallel to the glass (ie. not looking down) And finally, you have to know the lens' minimum focusing distance. I think the 18-55 has an MFD of 12". Manual focusing should also help.
