What is better for SPS growth & Color? Short or long photoperiod?

They all attribute it to o2...I want to see percentages you stated;)

They do? I don't know about that ;) Enhanced O2 availability is one of many competing hypothesis as for why photosynthesis tends to enhance calcification. The fact of light enhanced calcification can and has been demonstrated without a full accounting of the mechanism though.

Google light enhanced calcification and you'll find numerous studies. On average, light calcification is in the neighborhood of 3x as fast as dark calcification. See Moya et al., 2006 as one example. Therein they looked to see if there was a diel pattern in calcification in Stylophora pistillata under constant light intensity. There isn't.

Very good information~ Thanks...

I have ATI powermodule T5 10 bulb and have SPS tank
(the depth is 50cm,19inches)

After reading this thred, Following is my guess..

I can not know which proper time for SPS in my T5 pendant and

It depends on T5 bulb color because intensity can be different by T5 bulb combination...

My guess is correct?

Red light reproduces cells within the coral much faster hence the growth. Bluer light causes the cells to thicken and grow larger hence the coloration. Same applies to plants as well.

There's an article in advanced aquarist that basically shows how red spectrum light causes coral bleaching. They aimed various LED's at a pocillopora frag, and the red LED bleached the coral every time. The article was written in 2008. It makes me wonder about the effectiveness of all the reddish spectrum T5's that companies are releasing these days.

I believe this is a ORA Red Planet, it is under 150 w mh, with a photoperiod of 4 hours. At this time I do not dose, no carbon, no skimmer, just bi-monthy w/cs, and no supplemental feedings.
The first picture is from June 2010, the second I took today, Sept 7th. You can judge for yourself the growth in 3 months with only a 4 hour photo period. The pics are bad but you get the general idea.

I'm trying something different this year. In April I decreased my photoperiod to 6 hour on my MH with a whiter 14K 250w bulb. This fall I will increase my photoperiod to 8 hours with a 20K blub. So far I have notice growth has been slower.
