What is this?

This came as a hitch-hiker from my live rock or one of my corals that have been added to my 8 month old tank. When I first saw it I thought it was a mushroom or a type of feather duster that was comming out of the rock. However, it moves all over the tank and has grown. It is about the size of a quarter. I have also seen a smaller one of these in the tank a few times, about the size of a penny.

Any ideas?

Thanks...

Fleshy limpet, probably genus Lucapina. Pagojoe can tell you more about it. In general a harmless grazer of microalgae.

Yup, what Leslie said. These are actually the ones that may eat things you'd object to, depending on what you have in your tank, so keep an eye on it. Many people keep them without problems. If you google search for "Lucapina diet" or "Lucapina feeding" you can probably get a good idea of the risks.

Cheers,

Don
