What is tail rot?

It looked like my newly purchased true perc had a chunk taken out of him (between his body and the tail). I thought he had gotten bitten. But now, it looks like his tail is "fading" away. Is this tail rot (there is such a thing, right?), and how does a fish get it, and is there anything that I can do? Thanks for your help.

It's difficult to tell without a picture, and even then, it can't be accurate. There is such a thing as tail rot, but it could also be nipping from other animals. There could be hidden predators or just aggression between other fish. Either way, I would put it in QT immediately and treat for bacterial infections in a Hospital Tank.

Sometimes even if the tail gets biten, the tail may get bacterial infection. Are there any suspects that can damage the tail? If the tail is damaged by other fish, you should seperate the fish and feed well. If it is bacterial infection, you need to treat with antibiotics. Also improve your water quality.
