Trying to get an ID for a member in our aquarium club. What do you guys think?

I thought so too. Someone else said that it might be an acanth. lord., do you think that's a possibility?

It's not an Acanthastrea lordhowensis.

It's most likely a Favidae

That piece has very long sweeper tentacles which is common of the Favidae Family. Mussidae do not develop sweepers.

i know, i edited. at first look I thought favia, but a second later i thought some sor of mussid

I would guess Favid also. I have one similar that I haven't been abel to get a decent ID on, either.

A good way to tell the difference between Mussids and Faviids is by running your finger over a closed deflated polyp. Mussids have irregular septa with large pointy teeth or lobes. Faviids have a smoother more uniform corallite with a more simple septal structure.

Usually larger corallites have larger teeth or lobes. This can be seen very easily in Scolymia, Cynarina, and Lobophyllia. But it is still evident in smaller polyps like Acanthastrea, Micromussa, and Blastomussa.
