What is this on my coral?

Hello,

I am kind of paranoid since I've lost two corals in the last month to unknown reasons. Today my octospawn was awesome this morning but it is retracted now. Hopefully not taking the path of his buddies.
Looking closely I saw this thing stiking out. What is it??? Should I pick it?

Looks like a Vermetid Snail. I would break it off at the base and get rid of it fast or you will have hundreds of them.

over time LPS retract upward on their bases and spread out if the flesh is receding from an area due to damage any exposed skeleton is the equivalent of live rock (really) to any surface adhering inhabitant. there are similar spots around the coral in the picture, this inhabitant may be encroaching or stinging the flesh close to it's growth or it could be unrelated and you only noticed the inhabitant because your coral is having a bad day.

it is a vermatid, can irritate some corals; but not going to kill your euphyllia.
If you are having coral issues, its something else. What are the water parameters?

Its NOT aiptasia..

I don't sweat vermetid snails and just leave them and they 99% of the time won't cause any problems either.. They are harmless filter feeders IMO...
Many do not share my opinion though..

I'm of the same mind. if one is irritating a coral, I remove that one. Else I don't worry about them.

I think if they are at infestation levels, there is an underlying problem in the tank. Typical with any and all things that can become pests. Something is feeding and allowing them get that bad. How ever, the strings they put out can irritate corals, and their shell is sharp. If the arms on that frogspawn keep hitting it, it is probably irritating the coral. I'd try removing it.

Well, before reading this I went ahead and pulled the coral and scraped it off. It seemed like a little piece of rock, hard to scrape with my fingernail. Didn't come off in one piece. Are they typically this hard to remove or was it something else at the end?

Hard thing was the shell of the snail, its normal.

Yes that was normal. They build a hard outer shell and attach very strongly to rock or other hard surface.
