What is this stuff?

I have been dealing with this "stuff" for months now. I can't seem to shake it. Not sure how well it will show up, but it's a light brown stuff, it's fluffy like cotton... and it sticks to the rocks, i tried vacuuming it today and it won't let go very well. Someone suggested it may be a type of algae from too high nitrates (maybe too much food?)... either way i finally got a decent pic and hope someone here can help identify it for me. It is simply out of control... completely covering my rocks, patches on my glass, my filter and powerhead intakes... everywhere... Thanks

Oh, and most importantly... HOW DO I GET RID OF IT?

im not sure what it is, but what are your tank water conditions. Nitrates, nitrites, alk ca and sg ?

Nitrates and nitrites are zero to within range... sg's 1.021-22... i've never tested or done anything with alk or ca
 
does anyone else feel SG of .021 a little too low? How stable is your PH ? could be the beginnings od "dinos". Do any of the blooms have air bubbles trapt in them like balloons tied to a string?
 
I'm in the process of uploading a video of the stuff to youtube... i'm not doing a good job describing it I don't think... I don't see any bubbles or anything though...
 
I don't know enough to tell you its for sure Dino's but I have seen pictures online that other people said were Dino's and that looks very close to there pictures.
 
Regardless of whether it's this stuff or some form of nuisance algae... could i not just rinse my rock off with cool freshwater, maybe a minute or so, kill anything on the outside but still leave the inside of the rock alive... and put it back in the tank, or maybe replace it with some rock i have stored? Could that solve it?
 
I'm not sure thats such a good idea or not I've heard of people "cooking" there rock in like a rubber maid container they basically leave it in there with a heater and filtration in total darkness to remove unwanted algae. Would prolly be best to wait until Paul or someone with a little more knowledge chimes in on this problem before you take any action I'm sure there will be more people online tomorrow during the day.
 
Try to avoid any sort of drastic response (like cooking the rock). Most such methods are often avoidable. At least that's my opinion on the matter....
 
I have that stuff in mine too. Hope someone can tell us more about how to get rid of it without tearing things up.......
 
Not sure exactly what that stuff is but you certainly have to high of a nutrient load.

More frequent water changes and also raise your salinity. Check your alk levels and raise them to the higher range. Keep the PH stable.

Feed a lot less then you do now.

What are your water perimeters?
Do you have a refugium, sump, skimmer?
What size is your tank?
How many fish do you have?
How often do you do water changes?

Its going to take some diligence on your part to get rid of this stuff but if you work at it it will be conquered.

Cal 400 - 475
Two fish 1 Scooter blenny and 1 clown.
Tank size is 40g with a 15 sump, Total water volume is probably 45 gal after all the rock and sand. Skimmer runs 18/3 and 24/4
5 gallon water change is done every two weeks.
