i do use ro/di water and my nitrates are 0-5ppm the color is a little confusing. it is not like slimy it is tough like when you pull it off it feels like grass but purple

from a bit of looking sounds like some sort of Gracilaria macroalgae there are many types from red purple to brown
good luck finding it

hope this works

the larger pieces look a lil bit like Halymenia floresii but could be wrong i see alot of that stuff both kinds out at the beach

Do you have hermits? I'd imagine they'd eat that stuff up pretty quick.

I think it looks kinda cool in the pictures.

Ahhh....yes;) A pic is worth... It's a lot thicker than hair algae.

I had a lot of that like you do on some LR I first purchased. I left it on thinking that the crabs would eat it. They didn't touch it. I then thought that my last fish purchase (yellow tang) would take care of it. That's the only Algae he didn't eat:( I kind of liked the way it looked but it started spreading so bad that I finally removed the rock and scrubed it with a brush to remove it. It hasn't came back since:) The small pieces are very hard to pull off with your fingers...
