I bought this coral and I have no Idea what type it is. Can anyone help?

Not sure if thats it, it seems to prefer low-light....and its brown in color. I have seen them before when diving in the keys.. but never this large

It looks like a Oculina sp. They are usually non-photosynthetic, depending on species. I would be interested in the coral if it was for sale, point me to the direction if you can.

Thanks Bryan

I can find out if there are more...That type seems right. I am keeping it with purple sea whips....They seem to like the same water/lighting type. What should I have payed for this...I am afraid I payed to much!

It's an oculina. Chances are that it was illegally collected, because it's illegal to collect stony corals in Florida. I've seen them a lot near Tampa when I used to go catch stone crabs with my dad as a kid. You can get some on aquacultured rock, but not a big colony like that. I've always loved the way they look. I don't know much about the care of them. It might be non-photosynthetic? Good luck with it, I'm sure someone knows about their needs & care.

I dunno how he got it. I used to work for a live rock company out of Tarpon Springs, and there were some similar corals on the rock we cultued both in the gulf and in the keys, but yeah, never that large. I paid $75 for it.

He says he has more. Is anyone interested? If you want I can go check them out and post pics if you are. I calle my old boss from the LR company, he said they are the toughest corals available, and able to handle a almost any enviroment, and normal reef tank feedings will sustain it.
