What is this?

When I got my tank 2nd hand this piece of equipment was included, however I forgot to ask about it and since lost the number. Anyway I don't think I'm missing anything by not using it but as I have no clue what it is or how to use it I have no clue. I thought it was a strange hydrometer as it has salinity markings on it but how to use it no idea. I have a good recfractomer for measuring salinity. If you could shed some light on it I'd be grateful.

It's a vintage floating hydrometer / thermometer. I haven't seen anyone use one of those in years.

Not useless at all. I posted a link above on how to use it.

it will be way more accurate than a refractometer than can go out of calibration for many reasons. Certainly not as painless to use, but a very good piece of equipment anyway.
