What is this?

It started out white and now it is grey.

Can't tell from the first set of pics but the second set might be a sponge of some sort

it's the very same thing. It started out white and now it is a brown/grey.

It does look to be some sort of a sponge. If you can't easily move it and it is attached in a not so well lit part of the tank I would say sponge. Their are LOTS of sponge species although.
