What is this????

I have had this rock for awhile....within the past 2 weeks these Maroon things have been growing on it....1st on one spot now in several spots on the rock. I do have high nitrates...always have since day one. Is this a good thing or a bad thing????

They look like they're flattened blades.. is that true? If so, potentially Irvinea or a similar species. There are several that have this kind of morphology.

If its bubbled or spherical in shape, then we have a whole other host of potential IDs.

Getting a good fix on the identity for red macroalgae, especially when they are just starting to grow like this, is really difficult.

give it another month and post another picture of what it looks like. Sometimes when algae grows out of the rock it, you've gotta give the algae a little while to grow to what its supposed to look like.
