what is this?

I was digging through the attack, looking for supplies for the next project, this was in one of the boxes. I am not sure what it is or could be used for. I think it is some kind of skimmer maybe?

possibly a skimmer of some sort but almost looks like a sand filter i saw a while back on a discus tank at a lfs but maybe a lil different

make something cool with it recreate it make a name for it and sell multiple copies of them and become rich =)
